A Susie’s cupcake holds one of the sweetest memories of my life.
When I found out I was pregnant with my rainbow baby, I immediately knew I wanted to create a meaningful and intimate gender reveal just for my husband and me.
My sister, who lived miles away, helped me bring that vision to life. She coordinated everything behind the scenes, ordering the cupcakes and making sure the surprise would be kept from me at pickup. Because of her, I was able to walk into Susie’s Cakes and experience that moment without knowing what was inside. My husband and I planned a dinner date, just the two of us. At the end of the meal, we asked our waiter to bring out our special cupcake. Sitting there together, full of anticipation, we cut into it and instantly saw pink. We were overwhelmed with joy, gratitude, and so much love for the little life we were about to meet. It was just a cupcake, but it held one of the most life changing moments we’ve ever experienced.
We took the rest of the cupcakes home and shared the news with our family in the sweetest way. We FaceTimed loved ones one by one, and with each call, we sliced into another cupcake to reveal the surprise. Even though we were physically apart, it made everyone feel connected and part of that moment with us.
That experience sparked something even bigger for me. I have always loved dessert and will find any reason to celebrate with something sweet, but becoming a mom made me want to be more intentional. I wanted to create traditions for my family that my children could grow up with, remember, and maybe even carry on one day.
When my daughter turned one month old, I decided to celebrate her first milestone in a way that felt meaningful to me. I included a Susie’s cupcake in her milestone photos to mark not only her growth, but also our journey as new parents. That moment also marked the end of my baby blues, and it felt important to celebrate that chapter too. After the photos, I got to enjoy the cupcake, and just like that, a tradition was born.
Each month, we would walk to Susie’s Cakes and pick out a cupcake for her milestone photos. Those little outings became something I looked forward to more than anything. I especially loved the seasonal treats and themed cupcakes during the holidays, and I even included a gingerbread cookie one month. Each photo captured not just her growth, but a feeling, a memory, and a moment we chose to celebrate.
By the time she turned one, I printed all of her monthly photos and created a display. Looking at them all together told the story of her first year of life, filled with love, growth, and so many sweet moments centered around a simple tradition.
We still carry that tradition with us today. Every birthday in our home includes a walk to Susie’s Cakes, because it has become part of how we celebrate the people we love most.
Even beyond my home, Susie’s has become part of how I show appreciation. As a special education teacher and department lead, I often bring Susie’s treats to celebrate and thank my team. It is my way of recognizing the people who give so much of themselves every day.
To me, Susie’s Cakes is never just dessert. It is a tradition I am building with my daughter, one sweet moment at a time, so she will grow up remembering that life’s milestones are always worth celebrating.
Note: I'm including a picture of a screenshot of the video from our gender reveal, my favorite milestone photoshoot, the collage of all 12 monthly photos, a photo from her one-month milestone, and a recreation of that same photo when she turned one year old.
