My Susiecakes memories go all the way back to 2008, society’s peak cupcake-mania era, after a bestie from Calabasas introduced me to Red Velvet, and my life (and tastebuds) were forever changed. From the delight when a Susie’s later opened in Campbell, near my childhood home, to the tradition of an annual slice of Old Fashioned Chocolate with my husband Alex on our wedding anniversary, Susie’s has been in my life since college, through so many of life’s Big Moments.
The Susie’s story I’d like to tell today, though, began during the Covid pandemic. In March of 2020, (on my and my husband’s literal birthday), the world shut down. What followed next were some really difficult months. My husband and I are both physicians: I work in a hospital and he works in an outpatient clinic. We spent the next part of that year on an emotional rollercoaster, with the physical and mental challenges that pandemic and lockdown brought on.
We continued to go into work during some very challenging times for our patients, all while risking exposure and separating ourselves from our friends and families for their safety. It was a lonely, isolating time. When things began to open up again and we finally got share in-person hugs, we did so with our friends Matt (an emergency room doctor) and Amy (an ICU nurse), who live in Los Angeles.
We celebrated Matt’s birthday with a Susiecakes, and thus began a birthday tradition we have continued since then. Every year, despite busy work and life schedules, around my and my husbands birthdays in March, Amy’s in May, and Matt’s in August, we find a time to meet up and share a Susiecakes, be that in Los Angeles, San Diego, or even Palm Springs for Amy’s 30th birthday.
We have sent delivery slices to each other for milestones, work triumphs, new jobs starts, engagements, and so we of course shared Susiecakes at Matt and Amy’s wedding in 2022. Though life has changed so much since March 2020, I’m grateful for those first sweet moments that gave us hope back then, and all the ones since then we have shared with Susie’s.
