When I was in my twenties, I lived with a roommate, and we lived within walking distance of the Brentwood location. One of the things that really bonded us was our love for SusieCakes. Every week, we would walk there to get a sweet treat—whether it was to celebrate an accomplishment, help us get through a rough time, or just to have something to look forward to at the end of the week.
Unfortunately, my roommate (and now dear friend) moved back to the East Coast, which ended our weekly SusieCakes tradition. We stayed in touch, and not a single phone call went by without her mentioning how much she would pay to have a slice of our beloved celebration or marble cake. When I was going through a difficult time in my life, I would text her that I needed SusieCakes, and sometimes she would call the bakery and pay for an extra slice of cake to be added to my bag because she knew it would put a smile on my face.
Fast forward many years later, I traveled to the East Coast for her wedding. While she insisted she didn’t want any sort of wedding gift, I knew there was one thing she couldn’t resist. I ordered an entire celebration cake, packed it carefully in my carry-on, and brought it on the plane all the way from California to New Jersey (this was before SusieCakes offered shipping). On the second night of her wedding festivities, I surprised her with the cake. She was so emotional and in such shock that I had traveled across the country with an entire SusieCakes cake that she accidentally dropped it on the ground.
We broke out into a fit of tears and laughter, knowing it had remained unscathed through airport security, a plane, an Uber, etc., only to end up on the kitchen floor. To no one’s surprise, we ate absolutely every bite we could, and it tasted all the more delicious knowing how many special moments we’ve shared thanks to our favorite bakery.
To this day, we still laugh about that memory, and I often text her that I’m craving SusieCakes when I miss her. We may be 3,000 miles apart, but somehow SusieCakes is still bringing us together—and for that, it will always hold a very special place in my heart.
