They say you never forget the flavor of your favorite memories. For me, those memories taste like marble cake and vanilla celebration cake.
When I moved to San Francisco over a decade ago, I was in my 20s, living in a not-so-great apartment, and navigating the beautiful chaos of a new city. But everything changed when my mom came to visit. We were wandering Chestnut Street, grabbed sandwiches, and fell into SusieCakes. She ordered the German Chocolate, I got the Marble, and immediately a tradition was born.
We sat on the only furniture I had in my apartment, a couch, and watched HBO on my iPad while enjoying our first ever taste of Susie’s. From then on, I became synonymous with the brand. If there was a celebration, a Sunday shopping trip, or even just a post-workout treat, there was a blue and white box nearby.
Every time I flew home to St. Louis, I was the girl with the cake in hand on a plane. A custom German Chocolate cake for my mom’s birthdays. A welcome-to-the-world cake for my newborn niece. The legendary Blueberry Pancake cupcakes shared with my sister.
In 2018, life took me to Denver. While Denver has plenty to offer, it is sadly missing a SusieCakes. However, the distance has only proven how deep these roots go. Whether it’s a girls' trip to LA, a work trip to Austin, my husband’s business trips to SF that result in a precious delivery of cupcakes, or shipping a birthday cake for my mom, the tradition lives on.
This year, I am finally returning to San Francisco with my family for the first time in five years. When we started planning, my first question was to my mom: “When are we going to Susie’s, and what are we getting?”
I am so beyond excited to share the beauty and culture of the city I once called home with my daughter. But more than that, I can’t wait to share a slice of cake, and show her that no matter where life takes you, there is always a way to find your way back home.
